~Dimples The Dinosaur~

A long, long time ago there were big, big reptiles that lived where you live now.
They were called dinosaurs.
There were dinosaurs that ate meat and dinosaurs that ate trees and leaves.
This story is about a baby dinosaur named Dimples.
He was the kind of dinosaur that ate leaves and trees.
When he hatched out of his egg he had two little
spots on his chin.
They looked like dimples so his mom and dad named him Dimples.
A baby dinosaur is still a big reptile. He was called a baby but he still was big.
The other baby dinosaurs did things that Dimples could not do.
They knew how to eat the sweet leaves that were low on the trees.
They knew how to get a drink of water from the river and not get stuck in the mud.
They knew how to do a lot of things that Dimples could not do.
They would tease Dimples and tell him how dumb he was.
He cried as he told his mom how much he wished he was smart too.
He thought he was dumb because the other baby dinosaurs told him he was.
Dimples' mom gave him a real big hug and kiss and told him he was as smart as they were.
He just had a little bit of trouble getting the small leaves at the bottom of the trees because he was so much bigger than they were.
He would get stuck in the mud when he got a drink because he weighed more than the other dinosaurs.
You see, Dimples was just as smart as the other baby dinosaurs. He just had a hard time because he was bigger than they were.
Dimples dad told him that when the other baby dinosaurs grew some more that they would have a hard time doing those things too.
Dimples would try and try to bend down to reach the sweet leaves on the trees.
It was hard for him but he learned how to do it.
It was smart of him to think to get down on his knees to reach the sweet leaves that grew so low on the tree.
"Oh, how good the small leaves taste! Now I will be able to eat them when I want to." Dimples said.
This made Dimples very happy.
The next time Dimples got a drink of water he did not get stuck in the mud.
He was smart to think to get a bunch of dry grass and throw in it the mud before he walked out to the river for a drink.
The grass would mix with the mud and he would not get stuck.
All the other baby dinosaurs did not play with Dimples.
All the moms and dads were talking about how smart Dimples was and that made the other babies angry.
One day one of the other baby dinosaurs got his head hung in a tree.
He tried to reach up high and get some leaves off the tree before he was tall enough to do it.
His head got stuck between two limbs on the tree.
He cried and cried. The other baby dinosaurs did not know what to do to set him free.
Dimples saw what was going on and went to try to help.
The other babies told him they did not know what to do and asked Dimples if he would help.
Dimples was so happy because they asked him to help.
He thought and thought about what to do.
Then he went down to the black goo that was in a big puddle down by the river.
The black goo is what we now call oil. We all know that oil is slippery.
I bet this will work Dimples thought as he stuck his long tail in the black goo.
He shook it around a lot to get his tail nice and slippery.
He went back to the tree where the baby was stuck and used his slippery tail to rub all over the tree limbs the baby was stuck in.
The oil made it easy for the baby to pull his head out of the limbs.
The baby was scared but he was fine.
All the baby dinosaurs cheered and told Dimples how they wish they were as smart as he was.
All the moms and dads were proud of Dimples for being so smart.
The baby dinosaurs did not tease Dimples any more. He was best friends with all of them.
He showed the baby dinosaurs how to do all kinds of things they did not how to do.
Dimples grew up to be the smartest dinosaur for miles around.
Do not tease someone because you think he is dumb. He may be like Dimples and is really quite smart.
He may have a lot to teach you.
The end.
